More MEMRI

I couldn't pass this one up:
Writing for the Internet site "Akhbar Al-Sharq,"(6) which is the mouthpiece of the Syrian opposition, Dr. Muhammad Bassam Yusuf, a Syrian author living in exile, attacked American preparations for a military campaign in Iraq and referred to the African-American background of National Security Advisor Rice: "Perhaps the black Condoleezza Rice, the American security advisor, has forgotten her African origins and why she was in America and not in Africa, her original homeland. She has to be reminded that she is a descendant from African slaves and that the Americans enslaved millions of them and led them to America in chains from their homeland in Africa. [The Americans] killed millions of them as they killed millions of Indians, the true owners of the American land."
I guess he must have forgotten that the slave trade from Africa to the Anglos was largely a Muslim industry, and that the only place that slavery continues in an overt form is in Islamic African states. Of course, when it is taught in America that Muslims led Columbus to America it says a lot about the popular Islamic definition of history. It would be accurate only in the sense that a western route the the east was being sought to avoid the Muslim brigands that routinely extorted overland and eastern sea routes.

I will always respect those who are willing to stand up and shout that the Emperor has no clothes.

And Now, Some Good News

This is the meat and potatoes of a column that is entertaining in its entirety (and I, of course, encourage you to read):
The lead singer of every band that day had gotten huge cheers in between songs by shouting things like "ANARCHY!" or, "F--- CORPORATIONS!" or just, "S---!" and all fifty thousand kids would scream their approval, whoop, and shove their fists into the air. Typical, I guess. Then, "Buzzcocks" came on, played their first song, and the lead singer stepped forward and shouted this (verbatim from Jack, he wrote it down) into the mike: "F--- GEORGE BUSH! DON'T LISTEN TO HIM. WE HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING IN IRAQ, NO MATTER WHAT HE SAYS." And here comes the good news.

There was a long pause, complete silence. And then they started. The boos. One here, one there. Then everyone. Everyone. Louder and louder. Jack told me how the puzzled singer blinked in surprise, looked at the rest of his band, and then stepped forward again to try to save the moment. "NO, NO, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. I SAID F--- GEORGE BUSH. F--- HIM." The boos grew even louder, and then people began shouting back up to the stage, "NO, MAN, F--- YOU!" "YEAH, F--- YOU, A-----E!" More and more, ceaselessly rising, until the shaken band caucused quickly and just blasted into their next song.

I remember seeing a similiar phenomenon in the Libertarian Party soon after the World Trade Center attack. The LP was proudly proclaiming the need for "criminal investigations" and absolutely no military retaliation. The libertarian crowd quickly brought them back to reality, the same as this crowd.

Update (10/11/02)

Larry Miller has printed a retraction and now a correction. The band in question was not the Buzzcocks, it was instead Blink-182. Let's all make sure we stop buying the right albums.

US Press- FBI Profiler Says Maryland Sniper Likely "Someone You Would Have Made Fun of Last Week"

Funny shit. I think I know that guy.

No Truth Means No Freedom

I continue to be astonished by what passes for journalism in the Arab world. A striking dichotomy is evident in comparing the Saudi and Israeli accounts of the latest battle in Gaza. An ArabNews article has the following to say on the battle:
Palestinian hospital officials said all the dead were civilians, including 10 people killed by a missile fired from a helicopter into a crowd that had gathered near a mosque.

It was the highest civilian death toll in Gaza since July 23 when a bomb dropped by an Israeli plane killed 13 civilians as well as a Hamas military commander.

Let's see what the Israeli press has to say in the Jeruselem Post Article:
Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said that all but one of the 14 Palestinians killed in an assault on a Hamas stronghold in the Gaza Strip were armed.

"They were all terrorists with long resumes," he said during a visit to Eilat, "except for one innocent elderly woman."

As the soldiers made their way out of Khan Yunis, armed men outside the Katiba Mosque fired anti-tank rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, RPGs and threw grenades.

An attack helicopter fired at least one missile in support of the ground troops, causing the vast majority of the casualties.

Gaza commander Brig.-Gen. Yisrael Ziv strongly denied Palestinian accusations that the soldiers fired on worshipers at the mosque.

Ziv said the mosque was "a fair distance" from the firefight, and regarding the target of the missile strike added: "Without a doubt, we are speaking about armed people... they were definitely armed."

He said preliminary investigations show the soldiers responded according to regulations and with restraint, adding he is confident that film from a remote-operated drone will support his statements.

Don't forget the most important part:

Shortly after the operation, Palestinians fired three mortar shells at a settlement in Gush Katif.

Too funny to pass up.

TCS: Tech - Southpark Republicans

My only beef with this column is that we already have a name for "Southpark Republicans" -- it is libertarian.

WorldNetDaily: FBI: Maryland shootings fit no category

I had been waiting to see what the profilers came up with as the suspect. There were lots of low noises about this being some kind of milita wackaloon, obsessed with guns and reading Soldier of Fortune, but the people who aren't still in a gummint position are all tending to agree -- this isn't a thrill kill; this is a military operation. In other words, Arab Terrorism.
